Charleston Isshinryu Karate
Joint Base Charleston Kobudo Seminar
On Saturday the 2nd of November, the main Charleston Isshinryu Dojo hosted a kobudo (weapons or literally the “old martial way”) seminar, conducted by Sensei Rita Parke Stainback , Isshinryu Go Dan (5th Degree Black Belt) and Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinkokai Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt). The seminar was held at the Joint Base Charleston Gym in North Charleston, SC. This is our dojo’s first ever kobudo seminar in the Charleston area, and the event had an outstanding turnout! Sixteen students came to participate in the event including five Wadoryu karateka from Goose Creek’s Nippon Karate International Center. We started at 0900 (9 am for civilians) and continued until noon.
The first part of the seminar focused on the lineage and history of kobudo. Sensei Rita explained who Master Shimabuku learned his kobudo from and the reasons for some of the differences between our Isshinryu Kobudo and those of current traditional Okinawan kobudo. The second part of the seminar focused on the Kobudo kata called Hamahiga no Tonfa. She started with teaching various blocking and striking drills. Next she covered how to derive power and transfer energy through hip movement and proper body/weapon alignment. The concepts presented were meant to have a wide application and appeal to all skill levels and body types. We then transitioned those into learning the kata. While teaching the kata she was able to blend in the kata bunkai (applications) to drive home understanding of the techniques. The final part of the seminar was spent on sai techniques and comparing various portions of Isshinryu Chatanyara no Sai with that from her studies of Okinawan kobudo.
After the seminar, the participants hosted a lunch and socialized together at Steel City Pizza. There was great positive feedback from the participants about the event. Everyone had a great time and other than a few blisters, no one got hurt. The Charleston dojo deeply indebted to Sensei Rita’s visit and we all look forward to learning from her in the future!
The main Charleston Isshinryu Dojo holds classes three times a week at the Joint Base Charleston gym in North Charleston South Carolina.
